Welcome to Lilla!

Finally we have open our second shop. We are delighted to welcome you to Lilla.

(Lilla is the Swedish word for Little)Lilla-logga-colour

Lilla is located two doors up the road at number 15 Colinton Road (just the other side of our lovely Spanish neighbours). Why did we open so near?  Well sometimes we get opportunities in life that we really should take and this was one of them, and frankly it is great, I nip in and out between these shops in seconds. Don’t even want to think how much time I would be spending driving between shops (and we all know how fantastic Edinburgh traffic is). We were offered this premises and we were thinking what on earth are we going to do with two shops next to each other. And that was the start of the idea behind Lilla. We always had a small selection of Children’s designs in Spektakulär but lately that section has grown and we saw more and more great products and brands that we knew we could sell if we had the space. Customers have been asking about a broader selection so not just babies, and to be quite frank I did feel it was a bit neglected! As parents ourselves we do know that our children do come first and since Stina started P1, well hello party hell. And personally I am so sick and tired of the mainstream rubbish that you can get from the big supermarkets. We thought we could offer something better.

Last Saturday we finally open the doors to our new shop and if you have been walking by you have seen us working away. The Wednesday night before opening all my wonderful staff came in to start the set up and it was a super night. These happy animal and party  sequin masks by Danish Rice, well apparently not just for children :).

Team Spektakulär/Lilla!

From now on you will see Zuzanna, Kirsty, Joanne and Ruth at Spektakulär and at Lilla you will find Anna, Emma, Rachael and Ruth. Me well I will just float about ;) No no I will now try to get a bit more organised (keep ignoring all that paperwork is not making anyone happy). You will find me in one of the shops every Saturday and half days during the week.

Welcome to Lilla

We are now in the process of clearing Spektakulär of all the children’s designs including all the Moomins. We do know the Moomins are not just for children but we do believe that they will be best together with the books which are now located at Lilla. By clearing Spektakulär from all the children’s designs we are gaining lots more space and we are excited. Already this week we notice a huge change at Spektakulär. It is more grown-up, tidy and have a great feel. Which we are all very pleased with.

Sadly it did take us a bit longer to open than expected, I kind of forgot how much time and energy it takes to open a shop. I did kind of blamed the last one on being pregnant. Well if we ever open a third shop I might believe I will be more organised (hmm there is always hoping).

Last we like to thank you all for you kind words and your excitement and support regarding the opening of Lilla. Thank you! I do love our little chats in the shop! Sometimes it does feel very personal and I enjoy that from the bottom of my heart. We would not be able to do this if we did not have you to support and believe in us so thank you.

Glad Påsk – Happy Easter

We like to wish you a wonderful Easter. I am pretty sure you are all looking forward to a little break. Time of the year to relax and welcome Spring and of course stuff your face with chocolate. Now if you like to avoid the supermarket mass-produced Easter Eggs, why not pop in to us instead? We have wonderful luxury LAKRIDS (Danish liquorice) and yesterday Alex at Nordic Affär told me a huge box of amazing DUMLE had arrived! So Zuzanna has prepared lovely Moomin mugs filled with Dumle. Now you can enjoy one of my favourite sweets Dumle (Soft toffee covered with milk chocolate) and who does not love a beautiful Moomin enamel mug from Finish Muurla!?!?!! A super gift!!!

During the Easter period we are delighted to let you know we are open as usual…no need to panic!!! Zuzanna is kindly covering for me on Saturday so we can head north to the grandparents.

Since this is our first school year I see holidays from a different angle and yes this break is needed. Stina is tired!!! And I am sick and tired of her tears and whining! So a week at grandparents for them is well needed (for all of us).  I am sure that we are going to paint eggs and have an Easter Egg hunt in the grandparents garden which will be nice. While in Sweden I am positive Swedish grandma (mormor) is off to Blåkulla on her broomstick (sorry mum for calling you a witch, but lets face it, according to yourself and Swedish traditions you truly are one;)).

LAKRIDS

Ohhhhhhh you got to try these!

I am not a hard core liquorice fan, I do enjoy it I mean I am Swedish after all (it runs in my veins) but when I am home in Sweden it is not what I need to fill my suitcase with (no then I fill it with chocolate and bread). So when I came across Danish Johan Bulow liquorice I did not have massive expectations but wow. You know when you put something in your mouth and it is just a pure pleasure experience, like a smell or flavour from childhood and you get all warm and happy inside. That is what happen to me! Zuzanna’s friend once said Johan Bulow is the king of liquorice, she is not wrong! Even Richard who is not that keen on liquorice enjoyed Lakrids (unless he is just pretending to keep me happy).

You just have to try it for yourself! I have a couple of favourites, first  I am a coffee drinker and I tried the Dark chocolate and Coffee covered liquorice, oh hello that one I enjoyed a lot! But also the freshness of the White and Passion Fruit chocolate covered is stunning! However the Pink LOVE, gosh taste bud heaven and it is totally true what says on the box “With these flavour-packed mouthfuls, you get to experience a broad variety of taste sensations. First the intriguing taste of raspberry, followed by the intensity of dark chocolate, and then – just when you thought the ride was over – the tickling heat of Habanero chilli liquorice swirls around your taste buds” my mouth just exploded in flavours, wow!

They have four chocolate covered flavours which seems to be main flavours

  • A. Chocolate Covered Soft Liquorice (Belgian Milk Chocolate)
  • B. White Chocolate and Passion Fruit Covered Sweet Liquorice
  • C. Dark and Coffee Chocolate Covered Sweet Liquorice
  • D. Roasted Almond Coated in Belgian Milk Chocolate and Raw Liquorice Powder

C. Dark Chocolate and Coffee Coated Soft Liquorice

D. Almonds Covered with Chocolate and Raw Liquorice Powder

As well as the pure liquorice sweets (no covers)

  • 1. Sweet Liquorice: the one and only sweet liquorice you will ever need
  • 2. Salty Liquorice: this is the true love for any Salty Liquorice fans out there
  • 3. Red Liquorice: their answer to the american version, I would say it is better
  • 4. Habanero Chilli Liquorice: the spicy one (sadly not in stock just yet)
  • 5. Salty Chilli Cranberry Liquorice: created after request by the public (sadly not in stock just yet)

As you are aware I do enjoy baking but I have never tried baking with liquorice. Seen recipes for years but since it is not as common as finding good quality liquorice here in the UK as back home I have just not done it. But now is the time for me to give it a go since we also stock the Raw Liquorice Powder .

Raw
Raw Liquorice Powder

On Lakrids website are some pretty amazing recipes. Think I should give these chocolate chip and liquorice a go, but the ice cream and oh wow even some brown bread with liquorice…oh my baking fingers are starting to itch!

Dark Chocolate Chip Liquorice Cookies

Have I tempted you yet?

How about these lovely ones. Lakrids seem to introduce a few limited edition flavours now and then, for example I was given the Salty Caramel Chocolate covered liquorice for Christmas, that went rather quickly. For Easter they have a Mint edition (I thought I ordered it but must have missed it, sorry). Last summer was a Elderflower, oh I hope they will bring that one back.

Let me introduce you to the LOVE flavours. Two outstanding and simply lovely flavours that is good for all year around. Does not need to be for Valentine’s. We all need love now and then, so why not treat your mum this Mother’s Day or instead of an Easter Egg from the supermarket. new house gift, get well soon, the little extra to a wedding gift oh you name it. We all need love and for some it is an easy way to say it with chocolate so why not with chocolate and liquorice?!

Love Pink: Raspberry and Dark Chocolate covering a hot Chilli Liquorice (taste bud heaven)

Love Cerise: Blackcurrant infused White Chocolate covering soft Liquorice (very fresh and pleasant taste, perfect with a cup of tea)

LOVE Raspberry

LOVE balckcurrent

I am not sure how I will be able to stay away from these. Selling things you love to eat is really hard. You just like to take another one and another one…so addictive! Self discipline Charlotte!!! On the other hand, I would not sell anything I did not love!

Enjoy!

Welcome Stelton and Rig Tig

Wow finally… Some of you have been waiting for a long time for me to bring these two brands in to our little shop. And finally we have added a small selection of Stelton and quite a large by my new personal favourite Rig Tig.

There are a few brands that is impossible to miss and Stelton is one of them. I have a few Stelton designs at home which I love and use daily. I have a fantastic flask that is always filled with coffee (mulled wine) when I have FIKA at home. However, regarding high end and well know brands I am a bit careful to introduce them to our shop. It is not really who we are! But I could not resist Stelton’s Theo range. I mean just look at the fantastic Coffee Brewer…

Absolutely stunning! I need it for myself!

Stelton is a high end, well known Danish brand. They create high quality, stylish and functional designs for everyday use. Here is a little anecdote for you: they even teamed up with one of my early teenage crushes The Swedish Prince Carl-Philip (who actually is a great designer) and created the Stockholm collection. Which is very beautiful and do remind me of Stockholm.

We have started with just a few designs including Theo and Emma by Stelton but after a customer ordered the To Go Click Mug in Copper I think we need to add those to the next order, we all fell a little bit in love with it. We have not ordered the flasks or teapots in the Emma collection just yet but if you are interested please do let me know.

Stelton has also created a new more affordable brand called RIG TIG and I just love Rig Tig. Now these are practical and functional designs for everyday living. They come without boxes to keep the cost down, personally I do not think that matters, they are still beautiful. As you know I am a keen baker, do not like cooking, well who knows maybe I would, but having a picky family and a terrible toddler who refuse to eat ANYTHING I am not interested in cooking. Bakes no problem, she eats those for sure. Anyway Rig Tig have the most beautiful wooden utensils and I am in the process of replacing everything I have at home with these instead. Love them! But it is not only the utensils I love I also love the Parmesan grater and Dressing maker and the Storage jars…

Well I guess it is fair to say I am delighted with both Rig Tig and Stelton and we already are selling a lot which is the best approval by you. We got it right :)

Enjoy!

February deliveries

Lovely happy Spring deliveries are starting to arrive, January is a odd month for us retailers. The happiness of Christmas is over, it is dark, wet and quite frankly rather depressing. My pocket is empty so assume yours are too. And it is just too early to fill up the shop with happy, colourful, bright Spring designs. So yes I can happily say I am delighted January is over. I am just a bit sick and tired of these storms though, even though it brings the most beautiful sky full of rainbow clouds where the unicorn queen lives (why not, I do love the imagination of a five year old), but I do not and I am NOT enjoy that the boiler gave up last night and it wont be fixed until tomorrow morning. It was not nice at all to get up this morning, I got up, put on coffee and fan heater in kitchen and went back to the warm bed and we all stayed there until it was warm enough to even be able to spend time in the kitchen area.

Anyway now I am placing Spring orders and they are starting to arrive already. Last week, happy cards arrived from Lagom Design. A great mixture of new home, baby, birthday, Valentine’s and lets not forget our beautiful mothers.

Yesterday jewellery arrived!!! Yes a fantastic delivery with beautiful jewellery by Swedish Våga. Lovely Spring collection. Among necklaces and bracelets we also introduce earrings which I think will be a lovely addition to the jewellery cabinet.

We are also awaiting a beautiful Spring delivery from Swedish Sagaform. Happy pastels serving and cooking set mixed with new additions to the “on the go” Fresh range plus a lot more. You will not be disappointed!

And of course more plastic rugs are on its way. Love the Pappelina new FIA collection. Very happy. And wow the wonderful comments we have got on the stunning Regina that is now in the middle of the shop floor (yes please do walk on it, it is a great way for us to show you have fantastic these are).

Tonight I am sitting with cushion orders and oh it will be a colourful Spring in the shop. Love the happy colours, it sure brightens up all our homes.

So plenty to look forward to and I shall try to keep up with the blog to show you what is arriving.

Semla (Classic Swedish Bun)

Right Christmas is over and it is almost Shrove Tuesday. Here in the UK it is also Pancake day but at home it is all about SEMLA. Seven Tuesdays before Easter but in Sweden you can sadly find a semla in a local bakery or cafe just after Christmas. You can eat them just as they are or in a “hetvägg” which is not my favourite. You basically make it all soft and gooey in warm milk (NO THANK YOU). I am not a massive fan of semla (gosh I can not believe I just said that), I mean I like them but one or five is enough during this time a year and I do not need them every day which is I admit a bit un-Swedish because the right thing to do is to eat a Semla a day from Shrove Tuesday until Easter! In my home town Alingsås, (Alingsås is also known as the one and only Cafe town, every second shop is a cafe) there is a competition who makes the best. The bun needs to be fluffy, perfect filling of almond paste and then the cream needs to be perfectly whipped, and for goodness sake make sure there is plenty of cream. Oh gosh the locals are hard critics and I think everyone turns in to a little bit of a Semla expert! You should see some of the comments they make in the local newspaper (eye-rolling).

Anyway here in Edinburgh is a little group of Swedish mums (and dads), most of us have a other half who is non-Swedish and this group was created to meet up and sing Swedish songs with our bilingual children. Now these days it is more about us grown-ups gossiping while the kids trash someone’s home. Our turn today and look at me I have baked Semlor and here is a recipe for you!

I like to say thank you to M who also made the bun big style and brought with her as well as L who made wonderful classic chocolate balls. I made mini Semla (no photo before gone). They turned out perfectly fine, I find the mini ones a better size really. Not too much and if still room just have another one (ten is too many).

Here is a recipe for you of the MINISEMLOR. I hope you will make it and please do enjoy it with a cuppa, or like us coffee.

Ingredients: Makes about 40 Mini Semlor

1 dl = 100 ml

BUN:

  • 50 gram butter (as always good quality and salted)
  • 2.5 dl milk (always go for full fat)
  • 25 gram fresh yeast (I get mine from Sainsbury’s, ask in the bakery)
  • 0.75 dl caster sugar
  • 1 tsp grounded cardamom
  • 1 egg
  • 8-9 dl plain flour (480-540 grams)

1 egg (as eggwash before baking in oven)

FILLING:

  • 200 grams almond paste (see below how to make your own unless you just been to Sweden and bought some)
  • 1 dl milk or cream
  • 3 dl whipping cream
  • if you like cognac or some sort of liquor (mix it with the cream)
  • icing sugar as dusting

HOW TO:

  1. Melt butter in pan, add milk and heat to 37 degress (finger warm). Make sure not to hot then the yeast dies, if too cold it takes a bit longer before proving.
  2. Crumb up the fresh yeast in one large bowl, add milk butter mix and make sure the yeast dissolves.
  3. Add the grounded cardamon, sugar, egg and most of the plain flour.
  4. Work the dough hard until it feels light and ready (like bread)
  5. Let prove for 30 min (make sure no draft)
  6. Work the dough and make about 40 even round balls. They are small so don’t panic.
  7. Put on a baking paper covered tray.
  8. Let prove again for 30 min (do not cheat)
  9. Heat up oven while the dough is proving to 250 degress.
  10. Bake the buns in the middle of the oven for about 5-7 min, make sure they have a nice colour
  11. Let cool
  12. Cut a lid in each bun and take out some of the inner bun to use for the almond paste filling.
  13. Almond paste mix, grate almond paste, dash of milk or cream (the 1 dl) and the bun inners, create a nice smooth mix and put back inside bun
  14. Whisk whipping cream and put on top of paste.
  15. Lid on top and add some icing sugar on if you like
  16. ENJOY

How to make Almond Paste

  • 250 grams un-blanched almonds
  • 2.5 dl caster sugar

Part boil and peel the almonds, grind to fine powder in blender, add the sugar and mix for 5-7 min until nice smooth and warm paste.

You know this might sound hard work but it really is not. Not worse than making bread or bake anything really. It is just the proving that might take a bit of time. Why not give it a go and impress your friends and if you have a Swedish friend well this will be a massive and grateful surprise and I bet you they will be delighted. Everyone likes a Semla!

Have fun

A Saturday treat perhaps

Yesterday was a perfect day to stay at home and do some baking. Stina looked out in the morning while we were getting ready for the school run and said “I am not going out in that!!!!” yeah I felt the same but off we went. Nice to have a day at home with the girls during the afternoon and of course a perfect day for baking.

A few years ago my aunty had made some beautiful bakes and this was one of them. Six months later or so it popped up on my Instagram feed, I do follow quite a few wonderful bakers. So I gave it a go and yes it sure is a winner.

A few Swedish names are kladdkaka med falsk toscatopping, chokladkaka med kokostopping. A chocolate base with a caramelised coconut topping. Yes it works beautifully together and it is rather addictive, one piece is not enough, ten is too many (trust me on that one).

As you know I bake mostly Swedish bakes and this is one of those so let me do a quick converter thingy.

1 dl is 1 deciliter which is 100 mililitre (100 ml). I hope that works out ok for you.

1 dl = 100 ml

Chocolate Base

  • 175 gram soft salted butter (please go for good quality butter)
  • 3 dl caster sugar
  • 1.5 dl cocoa powder
  • 0.5 dl golden syrup
  • 3 eggs
  • 1.5 dl plain flour

Coconut Topping

  • 75 gram butter
  • 1.5 dl golden syrup
  • dash of milk or cream
  • 3 dl caster sugar
  • 200 gram desiccated coconut

Now time to bake…

  1. Heat oven to 175 degrees
  2. Mix the butter and the sugar fluffy
  3. Add cacao powder and golden syrup
  4. Add eggs, one by one (one egg, mix, next egg… you get the point)
  5. Fold in the plain flour
  6. Baking paper in a oven tray (needs edges and needs to be a bit bigger, one you would use for a traybake)
  7. Bake in the middle of the oven, recipe said 30 min I had it in for 20 min and it was a bit over done. Test with a stick and it should still be a bit gooey in the middle.
  8. Let the cake cool down a bit

Time for the topping

  1. Melt butter, sugar, milk and syrap.
  2. Let it boil for about 5 min
  3. Add coconut and let boil for a minute
  4. Add on top of cake
  5. Back in the oven for about 10 min or until topping starting to get a bit of colour.

Cut up in suitable slices and enjoy.

Time for a new Pappelina order

Yes it is time again! We are so delighted to see how much love there is for Pappelina and it is just as it should be. For any reason you have missed all the excitement about Pappelina well here is a quick guide.

pappelina_craft_1.jpg
A rug is born (Image by Pappelina)

What is a Pappelina rug? It is a rug weaved in Sweden made out of plastic. Plastic are you crazy?? No it is the best, durable, easy to clean, hard wearing, non slip and perfect in every room. Kitchen, bathroom, kids playroom, bed room, hallway, front room, conservatory, outside, summer house why not take one camping with you. Just pop it in the washing machine when you think it really needs it. Otherwise just hoover, mop or as I do and I am sure a lot of you have baby wipes or cleaning wipes.

Pappelina was founded 1999 by Lina Rickardsson who reintroduced the classic 1940’s Swedish plastic rug. She experimented and made them thicker, stronger and happier with contemporary designs. Suddenly plastic rugs became a massive trend again and many other companies tried to copy Pappelina but you can feel and tell the difference. There is no other brand that are as good and proud as Pappelina and you can tell. Each rug is weaved with love. I will one day fill up my whole house with Pappelina rugs.

This Spring/Summer season Pappelina has brought in a few new designs as well as a few new colour combinations which I think are really strong. Love the new Fia rugs and the lemon colour Vera rug is in my order already. If you like to find out more about Pappelina “A rug is born” and how a rug is made, please read all about it on their website. You will notice all the hard craftmanship that is put in to a rug.

pappelina_mono_trio_creative.jpg

I am also delighted that we have cleared away the big table in the middle of the shop and made space for their Regina rug in 180 x 275 cm. It is the second largest rug they create and it is amazing. I love it. After almost a week on the floor it still looks like new.

pappelina_regina.jpg

Pappelina does not only create stunning plastic rugs but also the most amazing blankets, runners and cushions.

Now next order will go on Monday 1st February so if you like me to add an rug, blanket, runner, cushion or even the amazing lamp get in touch. Either pop in and see us, call the shop on 0131 6290941 or email me at hello@spektakular.co.uk and we get added to our order.

Welcome AVEVA!

Before Christmas we introduce a few new brands to the shop and Aveva was one of them. And wow just wow your response to Aveva was so fantastic that we had to do an emergency top up order just before Christmas and I think I need to place another one very soon again which is the best feedback you can get when introducing a new brand!

For me personally Aveva brings happy, colourful designs to your home. I just hanged up some of their garlands over the girls beds at home and they love them and so do I. Nothing makes a home happier than colour, it brings so much joy! I am so delighted to see the response for Aveva and we will happily introduce more of their designs during the Spring here at Spektakulär!

Enjoy

Middle of January

How did that happen? And I just noticed I have not blogged anything since Christmas…oh dear!

Well I got lots of news, well maybe not news but the latest! First of all I like to say a massive thank you to all of you who supported us this (well 2015) Christmas. You are amazing and we are ever so grateful for your support to your local shops and of course to us!

After Christmas I just took a little break and it took me some time to recover. I must admit I have struggled this Autumn. After our first P1 child we changed my rota around and I am now working four half days (and every Saturday at the shop), then rush to nursery and the off to school pick up. It is great to be able to collect my five year old every day. But for some reason I feel like I never finish a project. So much paperwork and emails I am supposed to deal with and that horrible feeling that you can not keep up is quite hard to deal with. Feel that my organising skills should come handy but they seem to have left me at the over this Christmas. Anyway after Christmas we just took some time off and relaxed and spent a few days with grandparents in Aberdeen.

Now we are back to some sort of routine life again. Little girl did her last day at tweenies room yesterday at her nursery and is now moving in to big room. A bit more emotional than I thought. She is not so little anymore… oh the joy of parenthood!

Shop wise, well there is a little Christmas Clearance Sale taking place, will last until end of January, a great opportunity to sneak in a few Scandi goodies before next Christmas (I know but some people already started their shopping). Richard and I went to Top Drawer in London for two days and met some of our amazing UK suppliers and agents and saw lots of fantastic and stunning Spring collections as well as some new brands we would love to introduce to the shop.

Yesterday Zuzanna managed to clear the middle table in the shop and it is now gone…oh the SPACE!!! And we also put down the most amazing Pappelina display rug. It is one of their biggest size and now you can see it at the shop and walk on it and get an proper idea how fantastic these rugs are. I have got the new Spring 2016 catalogue and I am looking forward to start place my orders for this Spring. You will see lots of joyful designs from Sagaform, Broste Copenhagen, Pappelina, Linum, Spira, Aveva, Bosign, Muurla, Mirins plus lots more as well as new brands. But first we shall enjoy the dreadful stock take and make sure the shop is nice and tidy before new stock start arrives.

Hope you all have a wonderful weekend, do pop in to the shop and grab a bargain in the sales.
