After months of sitting still and eating more rubbish than ever my body decided it did not like me very much anymore and my mind was all over the place (not in a good place)! After we came back from Sweden I started to walk again and saw the add for Cancer Research #walkallovercancer. I knew straight away this was something I wanted to do, good for myself (as I know my mind is in a much happier place when I exercise) and do good for someone else!!
#walkallovercancer is a way to help raise money towards Cancer Research and together we will beat Cancer. Every day throughout March I will walk at least 10000 steps a day. Some days this will be easier than others. Please support me by donate here to my fundraising page. We will also create some boxes in the shops so please pop your spare change in there and best of all 30th March (day before Mother’s Day) we are having a BAKE SALE in our HOME shop at number 15 Colinton Road. So please save the date and join us then for homemade Swedish treats!
This will be a true challenge for me as I know myself and I am one LAZY lady and I give up so easily. It will also be a challenge for my family as I am making them walk with me, but also a fantastic opportunity to explore the beautiful Edinburgh and also to catch up with friends. Yesterday I walked for an hour with a friend while our daughters were at dancing and we walked around Craighlockhart Nature Park. Today the family walked (girls scooted) from Craigleith to Davidsons Mains via the bicycle path and we visited the grounds of the stunning Lauriston Castle. These are places I drive past but never explore, Edinburgh truly is stunning and I think this will be a month of me really getting to know this city I have now called my home for the last eleven years.
Even if you can not support me with money please do support me by follow me on our Instagram stories I will need all the encouragement I can get and please do pop in to the shops and ask me how am getting on!
We are absolutely delighted to invite you to our FIKA FRIDAY! By now you should know that FIKA is the Swedish word for Coffee and Cake :)
Once a month starting this Friday 1st March we will invite you to a FIKA FRIDAY. This is a FREE event, it is a fantastic opportunity to catch up with friends or family while browsing the shops. Enjoy a coffee and a homemade Swedish treat on us. Check out the new designs in the shops and let us help you find wonderful treats for yourself or gifts for your loved ones. We are thrilled to welcome you in for a chat and FIKA. Bring a friend and please do spread the word. The more the merrier as they say!
I am a keen baker, always baked but lately I cut it down a lot as I am also the one who eats it all (well I might share some with the family) and apparently it is not good for me to eat a whole cake (who knew)!
So I am sooooo happy I can bake and share it with you. Don’t take me wrong, I will try my bakes first to make sure it is tasty. My bakes will be traditional and modern Swedish treats. Basically because that is what I know. And that is what I am teaching my girls as well. I might adventure to try something new and if you think I really should know how to bake a Victoria Sponge well feel free to share your best recipes. One tricky thing with these recipes are that I only bake in DL. However 10 dl is 1 Litre and 1 dl is roughly 100 ml. I never weigh unless it is butter, but it says on the package and I am never spot on…crazy I know!!! I will share my recipes with you here on the blog, I just need to translate them first but they are pretty straight forward I would say :)
Looking forward seeing you tomorrow for our first ever FIKA FRIDAY!
Good Morning… well it was morning when I started this post!
Oh another lovely Autumn morning, I just love the crisp freshness, you can just tell there is changes in the air. I love Autumn, don’t get me wrong, I have no favourite season. I just love them all and what each of them brings. I do really appreciate having seasons, even though I do not get a lot of snow (miss the snow a lot) in the winter I think we should consider our selves very lucky to live where we live. Remember living in Las Vegas a year and in May the sun went down at 18.00 at night…it just felt so wrong. Sun is not supposed to go down until 22.00 – 23.00 in the end of May. Anyway, I am just happy that Autumn has arrived and even though I am sad to see summer go, yes I had a nice warm summer since I spent it in Sweden (believe it or not). But Autumn brings something else…HYGGE! Hygge is not Swedish, it is a Danish word but we Scandi people all seem to use it and be used to it. It is our way of living. Yes it is getting dark, dull, wet, cold and yucky outside so why not make our indoor life cosy. Enjoy the darkness and create a nice welcoming home instead. A cup of tea in the sofa with a warm wool blanket, candles (scented for you who likes that (not for me)). Time to invest in a few good books or a new box set on netflix. There are lots of ways to enjoy Hygge, but most of all I suggest you enjoy it with your loved ones. So this Autumn I shall try to relax more and hang with my girls. More board games and hot chocolates!
Other news is that both shops are going through some changes at the moment, almost daily we are getting new deliveries and there is a nice vibe in the shops which we all love. As you might have noticed Zuzanna is not around as much and that is because she is off to Uni this year to do her masters in Comics (why don’t you ask her all about it when you see her). But we are delighted to welcome a couple of lovely new ladies who has recently joined us. Our lovely Ruth just turned 50 (I know it is very hard to believe) and we took her out for Birthday drinks and I am so pleased with the team of ladies that now work in both shops, I really noticed how they all got along and enjoyed each others company and I firmly believe that to run a small business and not be the face of it you need to have a great team that support you and that you as a boss support back. I think everyone is happy if we all have a good balance and are friends. However sometimes it is a bit tricky not to be too friendly and more like a boss, daily challenges but we just have to go with the flow. As long as I stay fair and everyone knows what to do I think it is fine. So you wonder what I am doing then since you hardly see me at the shops these days, well I can tell you. I am spending every spare hour I have (other than entertaining our daughters) in front of the laptop organising all the Christmas orders…oh this year is going to be crazy…crazy exciting! Lots of new and exciting brands and also this year I have two shops to fill up. At the moment I am trying my best to get orders and budget to go together. It is tricky to try to get it to work, but I am hopeful it will all be well in the end.
But first lets enjoy a stunning colourful Autumn, blankets from Swedish Klippan has arrived, fresh designs from Pappelina, Nordic cooking books as well as life style books and had two Christmas books in that both sold within a day (hmm). Stylish Danish Sej, an amazing brand using rubber, so black, so stylish, so useful, I love it. Fantastic Iris Hantverk (oh I need to do a blog about Iris Hantverk, what an fantastic brand and the story behind is just super) brings wonderful hand made bath and kitchen designs.
Swedish Linum rugs and cushions. Sagafroms new Oval Oak candle holders (oh yes they are huge). Stunning Danish Sence Copenhagen, new jewellery which we are sodelighted with (oh I need to treat myself), reflectors by Swedish Firefly and lots more.
And good news, I have huge absolutely huge orders that is ready to be shipped from Sweden with santas from Nääsgränsgården and this year you will have two really bright shops in Holy Corner full of advent candle bridges and stars from Swedish Star Trading. This is only two orders of many many orders…you will love spending time at Spektakulär and Lilla this Autumn and Winter :)
It is time, once again for our annual Summer Sale. As you are well aware this is a clearance and when it is gone it is gone. There are lovely designs here that has been discontinued by the supplier, previous seasonal stock, brands we have decided to part away from and so on.
Sharpen your elbows because there is some good stuff in this years sale.
This is the only time of the year I buy things for myself. Designs I love but have not bought since I think oh well I can buy it next time they come back in…but now this is it!
There will be a lot by Swedish Sagaform this year since they have refreshed their range and some old favourites have been discontinued. Sadly we also said goodbye to Cult Design earlier this year so everything by Cult will be reduced.
All table runners by stunning Swedish Linum as well as previous season cushion covers, we will also say good bye to the colourful Candy bowls and tealight holders.
Having a clearance like this gives us lots of space and great opportunity to fill up the shelves with new seasonal stock, new exciting brands and so on.
Finally we have open our second shop. We are delighted to welcome you to Lilla.
(Lilla is the Swedish word for Little)
Lilla is located two doors up the road at number 15 Colinton Road (just the other side of our lovely Spanish neighbours). Why did we open so near? Well sometimes we get opportunities in life that we really should take and this was one of them, and frankly it is great, I nip in and out between these shops in seconds. Don’t even want to think how much time I would be spending driving between shops (and we all know how fantastic Edinburgh traffic is). We were offered this premises and we were thinking what on earth are we going to do with two shops next to each other. And that was the start of the idea behind Lilla. We always had a small selection of Children’s designs in Spektakulär but lately that section has grown and we saw more and more great products and brands that we knew we could sell if we had the space. Customers have been asking about a broader selection so not just babies, and to be quite frank I did feel it was a bit neglected! As parents ourselves we do know that our children do come first and since Stina started P1, well hello party hell. And personally I am so sick and tired of the mainstream rubbish that you can get from the big supermarkets. We thought we could offer something better.
Last Saturday we finally open the doors to our new shop and if you have been walking by you have seen us working away. The Wednesday night before opening all my wonderful staff came in to start the set up and it was a super night. These happy animal and party sequin masks by Danish Rice, well apparently not just for children :).
From now on you will see Zuzanna, Kirsty, Joanne and Ruth at Spektakulär and at Lilla you will find Anna, Emma, Rachael and Ruth. Me well I will just float about ;) No no I will now try to get a bit more organised (keep ignoring all that paperwork is not making anyone happy). You will find me in one of the shops every Saturday and half days during the week.
We are now in the process of clearing Spektakulär of all the children’s designs including all the Moomins. We do know the Moomins are not just for children but we do believe that they will be best together with the books which are now located at Lilla. By clearing Spektakulär from all the children’s designs we are gaining lots more space and we are excited. Already this week we notice a huge change at Spektakulär. It is more grown-up, tidy and have a great feel. Which we are all very pleased with.
Sadly it did take us a bit longer to open than expected, I kind of forgot how much time and energy it takes to open a shop. I did kind of blamed the last one on being pregnant. Well if we ever open a third shop I might believe I will be more organised (hmm there is always hoping).
Last we like to thank you all for you kind words and your excitement and support regarding the opening of Lilla. Thank you! I do love our little chats in the shop! Sometimes it does feel very personal and I enjoy that from the bottom of my heart. We would not be able to do this if we did not have you to support and believe in us so thank you.
Since we open the shop Swedish KG Design has been a part of Spektakulär. I am pretty sure most of you do have the super silicone flower-, lace- or splat coasters as well as the happy Owl money banks.
However KG does so much more and we have had quite a lot of their designs in over the years which we all love and I have them everywhere in my own house. Happy colour bowls, doorstops, bottle stoppers, coasters, tea towels. But now they have introduced a new fellow and we are extremely happy with the response so far. Already had to reorder Robert and also took the opportunity to add a few new colours. Personally I love the yellow one but could not find a proper image, just have to pop in to the shop and have a look for your self :) All images are borrowed from KG Design!
Silicone money banks sure are a functional design, Stina is in to counting her money at the moment, just learned about it at nursery and she is saving up for something special. As all of you with kids know it is important to teach our children about money and she seem to enjoy the whole saving up idea. She earns a little money now and then and even if it is just pennies they mean the world to her and she like to recount all her money again (about 12.50 at the moment I believe) and this money bank is handy since the head comes off, easy to clean and also wont break if you drop it. I have a memory of my younger brother smashing all of ours. Walked downstairs to find all our beautiful (not really) big pigs in thousands of pieces. Most of these were christening gifts! Yay! Not really remember my mums reactions but since I kind of know my mum (and turned out to be just like her… arrgggghhhh), I assume she was not impressed!
Really a plastic rug for Christmas! Of course why not…it will last!
As you know Pappelina is a brand we love, and are so happy to stock in our little shop. It is one of the brands I am extremely passionate about and I am more than pleased to see how popular it has become during the years.
A plastic rug by Pappelina is a Scandi as it gets really. Plastic rugs were big in the 40’s and 50’s Sweden and re introduced in early 2000 by Lina Richardsson. Back in the days they were everywhere and when I visit my grandmothers and parents I see the classic rugs everywhere in their homes. Plastic rugs on wooden floors well it sure is Swedish. Plastic rugs and ragrugs, fabric rugs made by left over or old clothing. In my grandparents summer house (where I spent all my summers as a child) they were everywhere. Easy to clean and kept the floors warm. The patterns were classic subtle neutral tones and stripes.
Pappelina brought back the plastic rug and is using environmental friendly plastic made in Sweden. The rugs are made in Sweden and their designs are happy contemporary. The classic plastic rug but with cheerful patterns and of course our Scandi stripes.
The rugs are flying out to new homes, and already a few more on order. We have decided to place one last order this year and it will happen quite soon since we need to have this order delivered in before Christmas. Last day will be this Sunday 2nd and it is a perfect opportunity to place an order as a Christmas gift. Why not spoil a loved one with a lovely cheerful doormat or a large happy rug for the kitchen. Are you thinking that a plastic rug is a silly gift, well you could not be more wrong. They will last and be there for a long time and keep your home happy.
During the last few years Pappelina has introduced cushions and beautiful warm blankets as well. Why not browse their website and see what you could ask from Santa this year!
Pop in to the shop, have a feel or give us a ring on 0131 629 0941 or email email@example.com for more information. Remember last date is Halloween! Order after that will take place in February March after we have seen their Spring 2015 news :)
