Yesterday was just a normal pre-christmas shop day. We were all feeling it – a bit frazzled, a bit high as kites, a lot in need of a good sleep and a mulled wine or two. Then the delivery man came…
Unpacking the huge box, we found a note from a gnome called Verner. He politely asked us to take him and his friends out of the box, brush their beards with the brush provided and straighten their hats for them as it had been a long and dark journey from Sweden. As the gnomes and tomte emerged from the box and we quietly and carefully spruced them up, a weird calm fell over us. It seems nothing is quite as relaxing as combing the wooly beard of a tomte!
Asas Tomtebod was founded in 1993. All products are beautifully handmade with materials from nature and by the process ‘Tova’ which uses the curly hair from the Gotland sheep, unique to Sweden and mixes this with warm soapy water to make the felt used for the Tomte hats and noses. With beards made from sheep’s wool, each of the tomte and gnomes are unique in colour and texture and are wonderfully tactile.
Tomte are the spirit and protectors of the home, every Christmas Eve a bowl of porridge with butter on top should be placed outside to show your appreciation (don’t forget to do this, they can be a little mischievous – don’t say I didn’t warn you…)
Since Richard and I had the shop and the girls we sometimes struggle to talk about anything else than the girls or the business…I assume this is common called as life! However sometimes you think of things you did before this life (I mean the last five six years) and I think about our city breaks our just taking the car and go away somewhere for the weekend, and yes I must admit now and than I miss that more chilled life. However our girls are getting bigger and spending a weekend with grandparents is heaven to them and I know the grandparents love spending time with their granddaughters too. So after our summer holiday I got one of those spam/promotional emails from the airline we used flying back to the UK. Affordable tickets to Copenhagen! Well why not, asked the grandparents, asked Zuzanna to cover the shop and asked Richard to take time off work (well that was the tricky one since I liked to keep it as a surprise, sometimes it is good to have the shop to blame on). So Richard’s birthday is at the end of October and I bought the tickets in August, yes I managed to keep it a secret! I think everyone knew but not him and he was delighted when he found out (phew)!
So off we went, it was wet and windy but it did not really matter, we did enjoyed Copenhagen!
Even though we are not supposed to talk about business we do, owning your own business makes it your lifestyle! Owning your own business does not mean you leave work and have other things to focus on, no its always there. You do weird things like when having a coffee at a friends house you check the brand of the cup, small things like that! Anyway yes we did see The Little Mermaid (larger than I remember). Sadly lots of tourist hanging on her and I was not that touristy to do the same. We saw her, said hello and kept walking around the beautiful buildings. Oh I could move to Copenhagen in a flash, such a fantastic city. International, happy and chilled!
Of course we have been in great shops, even said hello to lovely Jane and husband from our new brand Mirins Copenhagen and I am excited to introduce more of her lovely bath and body care products to our shop in the future.
Spent a few hours in a amazing shops looking at New brands, displays and of course all the stunning Christmas Windows! Arrgghhh we need a bigger shop, I really like a great big space to show all the wonderful, functional designs, colour combinations or just inspiring designs… Oh well we shall see what the future holds!!!
Now if you have not been to Copenhagen, just go! It is relaxed and lovely, everyone speaks English (which is great because my Danish is crap). And this weekend Tivoli open its gates to their Christmas fair (which we missed…boooo)
We stayed at a lovely little Boutique hotel very central. SP34, great hotel, great atmosphere, great staff, great breakfast and hello wine hour (oh yes). Tiny let down was the room itself, but we hardly spent anytime there. And if you like a good burger, in connection to the hotel is Cocks and Cows, the burger place to go to! And just down the street is a great independent shop Nordic Nesting, well worth a visit!
Now back to reality, breakfast club and nursery, late nights in front of the computer and yes we are busy at the shop which is so fantastic. Thank you all for supporting us. Not all of our amazing stars are on display yet but we can go through them when you are in. And more fantastic Christmas decorations are arriving daily.
YES the shop has transformed into Christmas and it is warm and welcoming and absolutely jammed packed and I am amazed how fantastic all the staff have worked. So hard, well done ladies (and Richard of course).
So after a long weekend, well started mid week last week really with the big pallet deliveries and then a few late nights, Richard took time off his normal job and grandparents arrived to look after our girls, the shop is now a proper Scandinavian gift and Christmas shop.
I LOVE IT! What I love the most is all the beautiful stars and candle bridges . They sure brighten up the shop and already many peoples homes. Richard and I hung up all the stars in the window on Sunday morning and then in the evening Richard, myself, Zuzanna and Ruth was joined by Åsa and Emma (who has not worked in the shop since Spring time) and it was so nice to catch up and I think they enjoyed it too. Emma and also Joanne will come back and cover a few dates from mid November and December which will be great. Both Zuzanna and Ruth have their own businesses and are super busy at the moment so it will be nice to have Emma and Joanne around as well.
After many hours of hard work, a short mulled wine pit stop (including cake and apple crumble) we had enough and went home and I think that was the first night in a VERY long time I woke up by the alarm. Thank you children! Then back again, Richard was sent on a mission and Ruth and I continued to unpack and organise the shop yesterday and today I unpacked the last boxes and have a lovely print delivery to unpack tomorrow.
Leave you with images from the shop…
Please do pop in and say hi. Hope you will love the shop as much as we do… I will post a album on our Facebook page with all our beautiful stars and candle bridges, but it will be another day because now I need to go to bed.
Really a plastic rug for Christmas! Of course why not…it will last!
As you know Pappelina is a brand we love, and are so happy to stock in our little shop. It is one of the brands I am extremely passionate about and I am more than pleased to see how popular it has become during the years.
A plastic rug by Pappelina is a Scandi as it gets really. Plastic rugs were big in the 40’s and 50’s Sweden and re introduced in early 2000 by Lina Richardsson. Back in the days they were everywhere and when I visit my grandmothers and parents I see the classic rugs everywhere in their homes. Plastic rugs on wooden floors well it sure is Swedish. Plastic rugs and ragrugs, fabric rugs made by left over or old clothing. In my grandparents summer house (where I spent all my summers as a child) they were everywhere. Easy to clean and kept the floors warm. The patterns were classic subtle neutral tones and stripes.
Pappelina brought back the plastic rug and is using environmental friendly plastic made in Sweden. The rugs are made in Sweden and their designs are happy contemporary. The classic plastic rug but with cheerful patterns and of course our Scandi stripes.
The rugs are flying out to new homes, and already a few more on order. We have decided to place one last order this year and it will happen quite soon since we need to have this order delivered in before Christmas. Last day will be this Sunday 2nd and it is a perfect opportunity to place an order as a Christmas gift. Why not spoil a loved one with a lovely cheerful doormat or a large happy rug for the kitchen. Are you thinking that a plastic rug is a silly gift, well you could not be more wrong. They will last and be there for a long time and keep your home happy.
During the last few years Pappelina has introduced cushions and beautiful warm blankets as well. Why not browse their website and see what you could ask from Santa this year!
Pop in to the shop, have a feel or give us a ring on 0131 629 0941 or email firstname.lastname@example.org for more information. Remember last date is Halloween! Order after that will take place in February March after we have seen their Spring 2015 news :)
So I am finally catching up with all my posts and so on and hopefully I shall be better at posting images from the shop regularly before Christmas. Delivery after delivery is arriving at the moment and one brand I am VERY excited to receive in again is Star Trading. A Christmas at Spektakulär without our lovely, stunning, welcoming Advent stars and Candle Bridges would not be as amazing and fantastic as a Scandi Christmas should be!
So this summer when we where at home for our holidays we took the opportunity to visit Star Trading in Svenljunga, about 1.5 hours drive from my mum. Not bad at all, so packed up and headed over for a little visit. Right, when we arrived, I think all of us, including a then 16 month old girl, first impression walking in through the doors to a 900 sqm showroom was WOW! We were all stunned and amazed, it was massive! And it was beautiful!!! Sadly non of my camera phone images does justice to how it truly was, so just imagine: brighter, bigger and more colourful!
It was very difficult to capture that amazing feeling of walking in to this room. It just went on and on. The girls and Richard disappeared in the back among the massive Christmas trees and of course cuddly toys that sang Christmas songs. They managed to set them all off at one time and Richard did say he never wanted to hear one of those again. But the girls were delighted.
Malin and Mikael took me on a tour and we left 2.5 hours later, all exhausted but happy. I felt extremely inspired and excited. The colours of this year is grey, white and red and the shop will look so stunning. Our biggest order ever of Christmas lightning is leaving Sweden this week and I shall make sure I can be in the shop when this pallet arrives because as a shop owner every day is like Christmas when we get deliveries. Some more than others!
This year we have introduced a few more candle bridges, pretty stars, led candles (great if you young children or animals) and lots more Scandi decorative designs.
I leave you with a few happy images from our visit, think they will explain it better than my words…
And do pop in after 3rd November since the shop will look like a little Scandi Christmas shop then. Previous and current staff will come in on Sunday the 2nd and while drinking mulled wine we will create a wonderful winter shop for you!
Do pop in for inspiration after 3rd November. Of course anyone can create a Scandi Christmas!
