Welcome Flensted Mobiles!

“If you have a troubled mind, watch a mobile and unwind” Ole & Aase Flensted

Danish Flensted was first created in 1953 by Christian Flensted and his wife Grethe to celebrate the birth of their first daughter. By 1955 Christian gave up his job to devote his full attention to the mobiles and “The Stork’s Nest” was now based on his home island Funen. By 1971 the mobiles had became so popular and the business had expanded so they needed a larger premises, so they moved in to the old school on the island which became the Flensted Mobile Centre and still is today.  Flensted Mobiles is today run by Christian’s son Ole and his wife Aase.

All the lovely mobiles are hand made in Denmark. For nearly 60 years their skilled and diligent home-workers are mounting, assembling and packing the mobiles.

When we opened the shop, one of my suppliers (now my friend) tipped me about Flensted. She was pregnant at the time and looked for something for her nursery and had come across these. As you are aware I was quite pregnant my self and fell in love as well!

So why this long before they arrived in the shop? Good question but we have a long list of Scandinavian brands we love and would like to see here in the shop and decided to introduce them after some other brands, and finally, here they are!

We hope you enjoy them and fall in love just as much as we did. We have started with a small selection mostly for children, but as you can see on the Flensted website there are many designs.  But of course since we are in Edinburgh the Panda Mobile was an easy choice, who doesn’t like pandas? However I know my daughters favourite, the first thing Stina said when she came with me to the shop the other day was “Moomin” and she pick up all the Moomin boxes and gave them to me…

Stunning MENU delivery!

As soon as a delivery arrives I get very excited.  So when Danish MENU arrived last Friday afternoon, lucky me was the one to receive it, unpacked it and got super thrilled! Stunning fresh designs! Over the weekend lots of the products became new favourites with our customers and got new homes!

Danish MENU is quality, functional, bold and good designs. Often theirs designs are award winning such as their thermo mugs, water carafe and our latest edition in the shop, the stunning jewellery tree in aluminium.  All their products comes in beautiful gift boxes and are our number one brand for wedding gifts. Here are some of the designs we have in the shop from MENU (and yes I know I have said stylish way to many times, but stylish design is what it is…stylish).

Personally I have not been able to resist a few products for my own home. Love my Verner Panton colourful bowls and storage jars. The Nordic Wool mugs, we use them daily now since they are our new favourites, just so lovely to drink from and very stylish. And in June when my birthday is I think I will wish for the bread basket set. Perfect for my knitting:)

Jubilee Tea Towel

I know I know we are a Scandinavian shop so why something for the Queen’s Jubilee, is it really something for us!? Well oh yeah, especially when this beautiful tea towel is designed by Sweden born Maria Holmer Dahlgren.

Maria has already a very successful London range and made a limited collection for Tate, which has been a huge hit. Best of all she has designed a Scandinavian range and (hint hint) bits from it will turn up here at Spektakulär late Spring early Summer. I am very excited about her collection, it is colourful and contemporary, just the way I like it:)

Hope to see you soon in the shop

Day trip…

A few weeks ago we took a little weekend off and went to spend time in Aberdeen with the in-laws. It was as always a very enjoyable visit with lots of good food and time for us to relax while Stina entertained her grandparents.

On our way home we went to visit lovely Paula of Farnell, this is a fantastic place to visit if you like a day trip out. The shop is owned by a very friendly lady named Paula who is Danish and when you are in the shop you get that truly Scandinavian feel! It has a lot of character since it is an old school house, half is a shop the other half is a café full of Danish Pastries and Smörrebröd.

I enjoy a visit here all year around but my favourite time is Christmas time, with log fires and light up candles all over. This is the place I find unique gifts or things for my home! Things that are a bit different and homely. Since I love finding different designs and enjoy mixing the styles at home, I somehow always manage to leave this place with that perfect treat or gift, and yet I have still not been disappointed.

Welcome

Lovely entrance

Bright sunny day

I really recommend a trip here all year around,  don’t forget to write down your name for a table as soon as you get there because it can get really busy!

Easter Sunday

We took the opportunity to keep the shop closed on Easter Sunday so we could invite all our lovely girls working in the shop with their families to come over for Easter lunch  Swedish style… well all of us girls are Swedish except Emma our very own Aussie.

So it was a squash and a squeeze, but so lovely to have us all gather at the same time. I know the pictures are not very good and I kind of forgot to take photos as well but here only a a few, and none of us! Terrible:)

Egg, herring, meatballs, Jansson's temptation and lots more yummy food
Who needs messy water colours when you can use felt tip pens just as well to decorate the eggs
Åsa made a fantastic carrot cake, only managed to get a photo after people went for it:)
Emma our own "Masterchef" had baked the most fantastic brownies and rockcakes...yummy

Easter in Sweden is a bit different than here, but it has also changed a bit since I was a child as well. We use to dress up as witches and knock on peoples doors asking for sweets. Kind of like Halloween I guess, but we also gave a lovely handmade pictures as well. I remember my dad used to hide paper Easter eggs around the house filled with pick and mix… amazing how they coped with us children all sugared up!?

As I remember it a Easter lunch/dinner is not far off our Christmas lunch, a bit more fish perhaps. We obviously eat a lot of herring, lax, egg and lamb at Easter and rinse it down with a strong Schnapps and sing silly songs.

I need to take some photos of us who works in the shop…one day!
