Happy Halloween!

Halloween is not really a Scandinavian tradition but I must admit I enjoy the excitement my three year old shows. We will carving our pumpkin today! She is off to a Halloween Disco tonight so I think she will be pretty happy when she gets home.

I am excited too but for other reasons! Tonight is the night we will introduce Christmas! The shop will transform and we are all very excited. Åsa  and Zuzanna is there preparing as much as they can before the rest will drop in one by one! My mum is over from Sweden and we have baked soft gingerbread cake to get into the Christmas mood!!!

Since we will be in the shop we will lit pumpkins outside the shop and if you are out with your little ones then do come along, we would love to see your costumes. We do have a bucket of sweets:-)

Right I am off, neighbor will collect Stina in 20 min and then we are heading over! Oh exciting! Have a sneak peak through the window tonight if you are out and about, if not pop in over the weekend. The shop will be way different than today!

Stay Safe with Popomax

It is sadly the time of the year again…it is getting darker and every day it seem to get a bit darker earlier and earlier!!! It is also the time a year we start to wear our coats again and to be honest most people wear a dark coat or jacket. I know I do!

I remember last year picking up Stina from nursery being tired, both of us and hungry and a bit grumpy.  Driving home in the dark could be quite scary, people are on their way home from work and standing half way out in the street assumed since they can see me I can see them. Children on scooters in dark school uniforms (they can go pretty fast). Edinburgh is a dark city, the streets and sidewalks are not lit up very well. It does not matter if you live in town or on the countryside, it is still important to be seen. I have now made sure all my jackets, handbags, Stina’s jackets and Lovisa’s pram is covered in reflectors.

So invest in a reflector and give the drivers a chance to see you. Even if you might think it is only the children that needs the reflector, think twice. You might be the one dashing between the cars.

Glimmis-kvinna-reflexLilja-detalj-hres_thumb

As a Swede growing up in the countryside we always wore reflectors. The schoolbus did not stop if we did not waved our reflectors since they did not see us. Reflectors (very ugly ones) were given to all students at school, you could always pick one up with you local bank logo or some local business logo. My mum used to sew on reflector bands on to our jackets. And I thought they were seriously uncool to wear until I got my drivers licence and realized what a difference they make. Since I moved to the UK in 2005 I have never really seen any kind of reflectors guess only seen them on bikers or joggers and I am clearly not in that category:). So I used to stock up when I was home and as soon as we open the shop we introduced Glimmis (Popomax) which has been a success. It is a cheap life insurance and Glimmis have made them fun as well.

Here is a little video that truly demonstrate what a difference a few reflectors can make. Both with and without street lights!

Be seen, stay safe!

It’s Pappelina time!!!

It is time for a new Pappelina order! 14th of October is the date! So for all you that is thinking about it! Now is the time to measure that space that is in need of something special…the amazing Pappelina plastic rug!

I can not help myself, so here we go again (sorry for my ranting)!!! I love this brand! I love my rug and if I could I would happily fill up my whole house with these rugs. Our hallway, under our big dining table, our bathroom, the girls room, the office! But for now one room at the time, and we started with a long colourful Lilo in Azure blue for our little kitchen!

Our kitchen rug, first of all we have black slate tiles so it for sure brightens the room up, second it hides all the crumbs, I am a rather messy baker and it is just super easy to hoover up any sugar, flour or anything that I manage to spill on it. Just hoover, mop, smaller ones goes in the washing machine or like I do I pop mine in the bathtub, rinse it and if any big stains happens to been created I just use a soft sponge and rub very gently. I just use washing up detergent to get it cleaned. When I happen to mop the kitchen floor I just want to hurry it to dry so I can put the rug back on it, a bit silly…I know!

I do have customers who have informed me (since I do not have any pets myself) that they are great for animals! “Not even the dog can break it”.

Please do notice that after our order has been placed, the rugs will be made which means delivery to us can take up to six weeks which might sound long but in fact you will get a quality rug that is hard wearing and functional which should last you many years of happiness:)

Please do browse their website for a little bit of eye candy:) Enjoy!

Pappelina Delivery

A few weeks back we got this amazing delivery from Pappelina. And we also added a new feature to the shop. A ladder so we can show off the plastic rugs. However with such a small shop it sure was a challenge but I think we have pulled it off pretty good! And they have cause attraction for sure. I am so pleased to see how many of you fall in love with these rugs.

Plastic rugs??? Well now after owning my own rug and experienced one myself how amazing these are, then yes I would happily put a plastic rug in every room of my home. They are great, soft under the foot, super easy to wash, long lasting, colourful and somehow they seem to hide the crumbs. Customers with animals tells me they are great for animals as well…

You can easily use these rugs in kitchen, hallway, bathroom, living room, great under the large kitchen table, kids play room, bedroom or why not in a conservatory.

Pappelina is a lovely brand based in the dark woods of Dalarna in Sweden. The rugs are actually woven in an old factory in Sweden. The plastic is environmental friendly and also made in Sweden. Each rug take time to make since it is a delicate procedure. This is why the delivery time can take up to six weeks, if not in stock the rugs will be made for us.

This is not all, as well as rugs we also introduced cushions and I am blown away by the quality and feel as well as the beautiful designs. These cushions are stunning and luxurious!

Happy Midsummer’s Eve

Oh it is this time again for the biggest holiday in Sweden (after Christmas of course). If you happen to be in Sweden today…well do not be alarmed if all the main cities are empty and shops are closed. It is the time of the year when people leave to go to the country side or to the coast. The maypole will be raised, girls wear the flower-rings in their hair and the big table is set for the big meal. Herring, potato salads and to finish it all of with a strawberry cream cake. And do not forget the Schnapps, and lots of it.

This is the time when we gather with family and friends and it is also the kick off for our long holidays over the Summer. Most Swedes take four or five weeks off work. Almost all of July Sweden is closed down and people are in good holiday spirit.

Richard has still not experienced this holiday mainly because we normally do a longer holiday period in the end if the Summer but one year it will be his turn…he will not know what have hit him:) However we are off to a party tomorrow with lots of Swedes so he shall experience a little bit of it. I better crack on, I shall make some potato salad for tomorrow:-)

If you like to know more about how we Swedes celebrate Midsummer why not join us with the Scottish Swedish Society this Sunday at the grounds of Edinburgh Academy (in Stockbridge). Click HERE for more information.

Happy Midsummer
